ISTOS is continuing the application of innovative technology solutions for the needs of individual groups in areas of the world that are in need. The following projects, have been initiated, and are currently being pursued by ISTOS members.
Communicative Telelearning Methods for Greek Language Instruction as a Second Language

To be announced.PROJECT SUMMARY: The International Science and Technology Outreach Society’s Hellenic Chapter, (I.S.T.O.S.-HC), has initiated a cooperative project that utilizes the Communicative Method of Learning and involves using cutting edge computational and media technologies to provide an interactive medium for teaching the Greek Language to children and adults outside Greece. This project is a cooperative effort of ISTOS with the Linguistic Laboratory of the University of Athens, the Institure of Language and Speech Processing, and the National Technical University of Athens.
Hunters woods Magnet School Distributed Learning Environment
SUPPORTING ORGANIZATION: This pilot project between Hunters Woods School and ISTOS is entirely done by both organizations own means, without external funding.
OBJECTIVES: This is a project that seeks to improve the utilization of resources and the communication and interaction between student, teacher and administration bodies in individual and group level focus.
GOALS: The specific goals of this project are:
1. Demonstrate network integration between Windows and Macintosh based LANs.
2. Exploit a distributed peer-to-peer and client-server groupware facility that utilizes Internet and WWW technology to improve the educational, and information processes in the school.
APPROACH:
1. Utilize WINDOWS-NT server capabilities for heterogeneous client platform resource sharing and utilization focused on printer and file sharing and automated archiving.
2. Select a Groupware application with emphasis in the educational interactivity and information sharing.
3. Install appropriate server and client server on a pilot sub-net in the HW school LAN.
4. Select particular applications and integrate them in the every day educational activities of the school.
5. Establish metrics of measuring successful deployment and utilization of the facility.
6. Evaluate impact on the educational and learning process.
Springfield Estates Elementary School Educational Experiments
SUPPORTING ORGANIZATION: This pilot project between SEES and ISTOS is entirely done by both organizations' own means, without external funding.
OBJECTIVES: This is a project that seeks to improve the utilization of new technologies for improving the educational process.
GOALS: The specific goals of this project are:
1. Provide students with a space for implementing their ideas on the WWW.
2. Foster the student-technology interaction for purposes beneficial to student and teacher needs.
